History

In 1961 a group of proactive golfers formed the Waimakariri Gorge Golf Club on Crown Land near the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge. The development of the course has continued from that day, going from 9 holes to 12 holes and now the full 18 holes, with the help and enthusiasm of multiple members and their families. It was achieved by hours and hours of voluntary work, multiple fundraising tournaments, and a number 8 wire, can do attitude.

The original 12 hole course was designed by Ray Blank and the clubhouse was opened in 1962

Local farmers brought all their gear to help with the job of cultivating and shaping the course. Foundation member Frank Hawkins.

Many years later members look with great pride on a now well established and presented golf course capable of offering all golfers a very enjoyable yet challenging day out.

Situated at the foothills of the magnificent Southern Alps and only a 45 minute drive from Christchurch International Airport is an 18 hole golf course which will delight from the learner to the most experienced player.

As well as the manicured fairways and greens the Waimakariri Gorge Golf Course can boast some of Canterbury's finest scenery. If not for the challenging course then come and play for the spectacular gorge and river views, the snow capped mountains.

With the wide open spaces the course gives a feel of isolation.

You’ll feel like the only person playing the entire course most days.
